TEAG: Content & design for greater visibility in the German energy market

How TEAG is building digital visibility in the energy market through strategic content creation.

About TEAG

TEAG Thüringer Energie AG is a nationwide energy provider headquartered in Erfurt, Germany. TEAG supplies electricity and gas to both residential and business customers, with a strong focus on sustainable energy solutions. With its 'Mein Zuhause' platform, TEAG connects with residential customers across Germany and positions itself as a trusted advisor on topics such as energy, energy efficiency, and electric mobility.

Challenge

The German energy market is one of the most competitive digital environments. Comparison portals, established market leaders, and aggressive new entrants are all competing for top positions on Google as well as for visibility in AI-driven search engines. TEAG faced the challenge of repositioning itself as a nationwide provider of electricity and gas while sustainably increasing its digital visibility.

At the start of the project, relevant non-branded traffic was virtually nonexistent. The website attracted almost exclusively users who were already familiar with the brand. New target audiences in the early stages of the research and decision-making process remained largely untapped.

Moccu x TEAG: Task and Objectives

To address this challenge, TEAG decided to strategically realign the 'Mein Zuhause' website as a dedicated content platform. Together with Moccu, the goal was to build a strong foundation to reach users with relevant content while guiding them toward product-related decisions.

The project objectives were:

  • Build brand awareness beyond traditional tariff-based communication
  • Position TEAG as a trusted advisor in the energy sector
  • Guide users from initial research through to tariff selection
  • Significantly increase organic traffic

Our Approach

Together with Moccu, TEAG developed an integrated content and design strategy that treats content, design, and performance as a unified system. In addition to traditional search engine optimization, the content strategy also aims to achieve visibility in AI-powered search systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google’s AI Overviews.

Content, design, and performance as the foundation for digital visibility

Implementation

The project was structured into three key phases:

Phase 1: Data-driven foundation

Before starting the content and design implementation, we analyzed the competitive landscape and assessed the current state of TEAG’s digital ecosystem. This comprehensive performance audit covered UX/UI, content, and technical SEO.

The goal was to identify the strengths and weaknesses among relevant market players, uncover technical optimization potential, and establish a solid foundation for the content strategy.

At the same time, relevant search terms were analyzed, content gaps were identified, and high-potential strategic topic areas were defined.

The data-driven foundation established through the audit served as the starting point for all subsequent measures.

Phase 2: Strategic content creation

The goal of the content strategy was not only to build organic reach but to systematically translate it into measurable business impact. Content was developed based on keywords with high strategic potential and consistently aligned with users’ information and decision-making processes.

Following the research, definition, and prioritization of relevant topics and keywords, we created a clear topic structure and information architecture. This resulted in approximately 40 advisory articles covering electricity, gas, energy efficiency, and electric mobility. Each piece was created based on detailed SEO briefings with a strong focus on search intent and conversion.

Rather than producing isolated articles, this approach created an interconnected content ecosystem with a clear structure and strategic depth. At the same time, the content was designed to perform not only in traditional search results but to be easily understood, cited, and surfaced by AI-driven search engines.

Phase 3: Design

Based on the overall strategy and concept, and in alignment with TEAG’s CI guidelines, the UI design for the 'Mein Zuhause' website was developed.

Design pattern library: Accessibility and optimization built in

For the 'Mein Zuhause' website, we created a comprehensive design pattern library defining all core design principles, components, and modules. This served as the foundation for the interface design. The goal was to optimize existing design elements for accessibility and usability without altering TEAG’s established look and feel.

A particular focus was on developing a consistent and accessible color system, with clearly defined roles for interactive elements, background surfaces, and visual highlights. In addition, the layout grid was refined to ensure optimal line length and readability across all screen sizes. The typography scale was carefully adapted to support text-heavy advisory content, creating a clear and effective visual hierarchy.

Through these and other targeted optimizations, a consistent and robust design foundation was created, which preserves TEAG’s brand identity while enabling intuitive user navigation, improved content comprehension, and a clear visual structure for a content-driven website.

A scalable design that combines usability and SEO

Content only reaches its full potential when supported by a design that takes both user needs and search engine requirements into account. Accordingly, the design of modules and page types followed current SEO and usability best practices.

By working efficiently with a limited number of modules, we created a flexible system that supports a wide range of page layouts across different page types. At the same time, it provides a scalable foundation for future enhancements and can be easily extended to additional features – such as the ongoing optimization of the tariff calculator and the checkout process.

Outlook

The collaboration is ongoing: in the future, Moccu will also support TEAG with SEA (search engine advertising) initiatives. In doing so, TEAG is pursuing an approach that is often overlooked when large media agencies focus solely on running ads – the close integration of SEA and SEO.

By strategically aligning both channels, TEAG can unlock synergies that not only improve overall performance but also make SEA budgets more efficient.

In addition, to further improve conversion rates, we are developing a new tariff calculator along with an optimized checkout process. This solution is expected to be integrated into both the 'Mein Zuhause' platform and the TEAG main website.
